Dairy Free “Ice Cream” – that is actually good!

So you may know that I am newly severely lactose intolerant and am having a really hard time with it (see: Cheese popcorn note to self from earlier today). I am trying to find low point alternatives to dairy products with the caveat that they must taste good.  Though ice cream has not been something that I have had cravings for, I do want it sometimes but it really kills my stomach after about 20 minutes.

While at the grocery store on Monday I saw Tofutti brand “non dairy” frozen dessert. I tried the Chocolate Fudge flavor and was actually not excited about trying it because I figured it would be terrible! I was so wrong – it is so creamy, tasty and truthfully tastes like ice cream! It has a ripple of fudge running through it (not my favorite part- I ate around it) but the chocolate flavoring is really chocolatey. If you have problems with lactose, this is the “ice cream” for you!

PS: 1/2 cup serving is 3 WW points for the chocolate fudge (not currently listed on the Tofutti websiste) Not sure how that compares to regular ice cream as I don’t normally eat it. Sounds kinda high to me but I only need a taste.

Tofutti has come a long way. 9 years ago it was gritty and not so tasty. The also make really good ‘ice-cream’ sandwiches and fudge bars. For dairy alternatives, we have found the following to be the most tasteful:

Soy Delicious Frozen desert (I love the Vanilla). We used to eat the Rice Dream but switched somewhere along the lines.
Silk, or Soy Sensational (not the flavours), Soy drink, although if you have PC brands (Loblaw’s?), the Organics is best.
Veggie cheese (also in shredded for pizza, but go easy on it)
Add Silken tofu to smoothies instead of yogurt

We used to drink the Rice Dream, and I recommend it if you like it, but it does not ‘cook’ well in recipes. The soy does. I’m also not a fan of the Almond drinks, but many like them.

  • 3 points is about right for 1/2 cup of full fat ice cream — most of the Breyer’s flavors are about that. Glad you found something you like (and that likes you!). I like the Rice Dream “milk” too — the vanilla is actually very good in cereal!
