Strawberry Allergy?

Frak!

I have been allergic to shellfish (15 years) and sulfa drugs (4 years), but have always eaten strawberries (I thought) with no problems. The last 2 times I have eaten strawberries, though, I have noticed that I had a clear runny nose, was sneezing a lot and felt like I had seasonal allergies (itchy eyes and face, etc) – I would just take Nasacort and Allegra (that I normally take for hay fever) and got on with my day.

Yesterday and tonight, after eating strawberries 2 times in the last 24 hours, I noticed the same symptoms, only this time it is freezing out and not yet seasonal allergy time here in Chicago!

I truly thought a food allergy was always "a bad one", like how I react to shellfish. Guess I will be making another appt with my allergist and staying away from yummy yummy strawberries for now!

Damnit. I hate even the SMELL of shrimp and oysters, so it is cool I can’t have them. But STRAWBERRIES!?!?! I frickin love them. I hope this is just some crazy fluke.

Anyone else out there allergic to strawberries or think they are?

ETA: Found this a few minutes ago.

I quote:

The symptoms of a strawberry allergy are similar to food allergy reactions.

The most common symptom is oral allergy syndrome, characterized by allergic reactions in the mouth and throat. There can be tingling, itching, and swelling in the mouth, lips, tongue, throat, and palate. Watery itchy eyes, a runny nose, and sneezing can accompany the reactions. Those with hay fever are most susceptible, especially spring hay fever due to birch pollen, and summer hay fever due to ragweed pollen.

Damnit again.
