Where I’ve Been- Part 2 AKA: Why I am PROUD

Congratulate me- I am a Master!! :)

Well, I have a Master’s Degree, at least. I am definitely not a Master teacher yet. Notice I said YET. lol

I am proud: After 1 year of hard work, frustration, jubilation, laughter, tears, 28 Kindergarten students, 10 (other teacher’s) classroom visits, 4 weeks of lead teaching, countless hours of studying, 6 major papers, a spring break trip to Mexico with 7 of my besties, my grandpa and 16 year-old cat passing away, my friends wondering where I disappeared to, missing Blogher but having a blast at Fitbloggin… I made it.

NLU graduation was today. Even though I decided not to spend the 70 bucks for the cap and gown (I am a poor teacher now, you know!!), I spent the morning watching some of my friends walk on the streaming video online. It was great to see Rahm Emanuel (Chicago’s new mayor) talk so highly (and for SO LONG!!) about the program I went through and how tell my 68 other program graduates that we are the future of teaching.

I am proud that I have a first grade position at a school in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood of Chicago and that I am going to be able to bring my fun personality and strong work ethic to my kids.

I am proud that I pulled off a 4.0 grade point average for the first time in my life. I worked hard, asked for help, and met each hard assignment head on. I persevered and did the best that I could— and it PAID OFF!! :)

My summer is pretty short this year- I will work for a “year round” school for the 2012 school year- the first day for teachers to report is August 1. The first day for the students is August 8th. I aso have professional development this summer for 3 weeks to help with guided reading, math and numeracy skills and a bootcamp for new teachers.

So yeah, short summer.

I am kinda freaking out right now- I haven’t seen my new room yet and I have NO IDEA how I am going to decorate it when I am there. I know it will all work out, but I am a planner and without seeing my new room, I can’t plan for what I need.

OK gotta run! AJ

The graduate :)

[caption id="attachment_1777" align="aligncenter" width="200" caption="The graduate...:)"]Me after graduation[/caption]

I pwned the Mexican Restaurant!

I pre-tracked, I ate what I planned (actually less than I planned) and I walked out of the restaurant satisfied but not stuffed.

YES I DID!

What was different tonight than what I originally planned: When I planned today early, I gave myself 24 chips, but when I got to 12 (one serving) I felt like I didn’t need anymore so I stopped. Also, I planned to eat 1/4 cup equivalent of guacamole- when it came out, it was only OK tasting not amazing as I had hoped, so I only are one chip worth. I ended up adding rice and a small amount of beans to the meal as they were really tasty.

All in all, I did very well. I ate my 2 chicken fajitas, drank diet coke and had a fun night with my friends.

Tomorrow starts a full 3 weeks of craziness, so I am going to put three goals up on my page and try to stick to them for the week.

  1. Post my food journals (whatever they may be) everyday before 11:30pm.
  2. Allow myself one 12oz diet soda per day.
  3. Eat breakfast everyday.

Hope you have a great week! :)

Day 7: ONE WEEK DOWN!

Bullets away!

  • I recorded 7 days of eating-every morsel- there should be a freakin star on WWs etools for that!! ;)
  • I weigh in tomorrow and guess who showed up unannounced today… (sorry guys) YEP! Aunt Flo. I hope it doesn’t affect my weigh-in too much– I need to see a little WOW on that scale!!
  • I really worked on eating this week. I will probably stay with eating next week too and begin to ease activities into my plan starting the 3rd week. Usually I go allllllllll out, get overwhelmed and eat a super huge fast food meal that I don’t track. I am gonna try it differently this time. :)
  • My goal for next week: TAKE TIME FOR ME. That means, savor my food, TAKE TIME TO TRACK, and if all else fails, take a picture of it before eating so I can track it later. The new school, new kids and new grade level (I am training in a new classroom for the next 3 weeks and switching from K to 1st) is gonna be hectic, stressful and not easy.
  • I am proud of myself for using my weekly points and splurging on ice cream cake today at school for Miss N’s birthday. I wanted it, I ate only as much as I wanted (a small portion) and I did not want anymore. It was good and I shook the sugar craving that has been bugging me the past few days.
  • Also proud that I even used my weekly points. Previous WW experiences would see me hoarding those points and priding myself on not touching them. Now, I see them as a way to celebrate a friend’s birthday, have a glass of wine if I want it, or share an app with friends when I am out. This is not about deprivation for me- it is about portion control, eating until I am satisfied not sick and eating food that is tasty and good for me.
  • OK, off to have a Fabulous Friday!

Day 6: Another Day, Another Fast Food-Filled Journal

IT is 11:55pm and I am making my deadline of posting every day– NSV!!

Short, sweet and to the point- here is my journal for the day. I ate out at each meal, but am proud to day I tracked everything and still stayed within my daily/weekly point target. I should have said no to the 3pm pizza that they offered up at the meeting, but I just didn’t eat dinner tonight. And I was satisfied enough hunger-wise with the pizza to be OK with not having anything to eat after 4.

Next week will be different as I have no meetings and will be RUNNING to scarf down anything at lunch “time”. The school day does not really allow any time to eat for teachers. :( BUT I will work on eating/bringing really large healthy breakfasts and making sure I am getting in a snack when I can.

Ta ta for now! AP

NSV!

I am so proud of myself today.

I could have gone off plan- but I didn’t. I was hungry after my day of meetings, and could have gone out with the girls to grab fast food, but I knew I had eaten out catered food at lunch, and really needed something home-cooked for dinner. I stopped at the grocery store on the way home, and dinner was prepared, portioned out, leftovers stored and cleaned up by 6pm.

I even made my own low-sodium taco seasoning. CHECK ME OUT. :)

I could have “guestimated” the amounts of food I was going to eat – but I used my handy-dandy food scale and measured to the gram. I know I have issues with portion control, and I did not let that stop me. My eyes definitely were bigger than my stomach, because after I measured everything out (with double portions of cheese, meat and baked scoops) I was satisfied and I only used 3 of my weekly points for the day. I don’t feel bloated and awful like I usually do after dinner, and I am actually ready to get some homework done. Normally I would want to go right to sleep after dinner.

I am still amazed that I am on day 3 of WW and I have kept up with journaling. ESPECIALLY if I think I am going to go over in points– I used to just give up (yes, even on day 3.)

The catered meal we had today was from Panera Bread (NO PIZZA! HUZZAHH! My prediction was wrong!), who thankfully posts their nutrition information on their website. I was able to make a healthy meal choice and only needed 1/2 my sandwich, though I did eat the chips. No cookie for me- I gave it away. Not because I couldn’t spare the points, but because I really didn’t want or need it. :D

I realized something this morning, though, that really makes me sad. On Saturday and Sunday, I had a horrible migraine that I could not seem to shake. I have not been having them for the past few months then Saturday and Sunday they hit me like a ton of bricks. I thought maybe I was not getting enough water now that I was doing WW (or maybe going through withdrawal from caffeine) but it took me HOURS to get rid of them after taking something and drinking tons of water. I had about 3 cups total of fresh cut strawberries total both days but thought nothing of it.

Then today, after eating about a cup for breakfast, I got another horrific migraine. I have had strawberry issues before but haven’t (I guess) noticed any issues until this weekend. I googled “strawberries and migraine” and I guess it really is a thing. SOOOO- I am crabby but I won’t be eating anymore strawberries for the time-being. GRRR.

OK, off to do some homework! AJ

MEASURED on the food scale for dinner AND IT WORKED! Satisfied after dinner.. WOOHOO! Also, knew “breakfast” at work would not be the best for me, so I bought my own b-fast and snacks… NSV!!

I GOT AN A!

Remember that paper I b*tched about all over the interwebs the last couple of weeks? (you missed most of it b/c I was whining on my personal Facebook page alot. Be glad you aren’t my friend. Yeah, it was that bad.)

I.

GOT.

AN.

A.

(yeh I did!)

I am still waiting to hear back from the teacher on the 2nd paper i did- I just turned it in on Tuesday.

PROUD OF ME!

Where I’ve Been: Now with more Big News!

Since Fitbloggin, I have been MIA when it comes to all things social media.

It wasn’t the conference– I had a BLAST.

My break had alot to do with my personal life and now that alot of the issues are resolved, I am finally ready to come back.

Lots of stuff has been happening…. Here is a little bit of this and that….

First, some news on the fitness front– I am signed up for my FIRST 1/2 MARATHON!!!! A 1/2 marathon is on my bucket list, and when my friend Loren told me about the training program that helps support the AIDS Foundation of Chicago along with giving me world-class training, I was IN! I don’t want my first real post back to be a pitch for money, but if you would like to support me on my journey to 13.1 miles, please click here for more information and a secure donation area. So far my training has been good: This is in part what I wrote as an update to my friends and family this morning:

Yesterday, I did my timing/pacing group 3 mile walk for the AIDS Foundation 1/2 Marathon. I “slogged” my way through it– “slogged” is a word I stole from amerrylife that means “slow jogging” — and did OK– 16:30 minute miles. Not the best time I have done in a race, but good enough. Because there is a time limit for the Marathon, I was put in the 14:00 minute mile group with my friend Loren. Atleast I will have a friend to help me on my journey to 13.1 miles! :-) I am still a bit sore today, but know the more I train the faster my recovery will be.

If you have trained for a 1/2 marathon and have any tips or tricks, please let me know. I can use all the support i can get! :-)

Second big news- and I am kinda burying the lead here-

I AM FINALLY GAINFULLY EMPLOYED!!!!

Cue the confetti and get out the party hats!

A big reason I have been gone from the blog is hat I have spent many a sleepless night worrying about not having a job. The past 6 months have been rough. Ok, the past 3 months have been rough. I actually enjoyed having “time” to do things I wanted to do and not have to worry about meetings, deadlines and waking up at 6 am. Without being laid off, I would never have been able to be an assistant coach for Girls on the Run. Or babysit for a great mom’s group. Or take 4pm naps!

But after a few months it got old sending out resumes and never getting a call back.

In early March, I heard about a program here in Chicago that allows people who already have a B.A. to train to become an urban teacher through “residency-style” program. The competition is stiff- out of 1000 people who apply, only around 100 people are asked to join the program. I was late in hearing about the program (they start taking applications in September and close applications April 1) but decided that I would apply and see what happened.

After a crazy application process, rigorous testing (and by rigorous I mean two 5 hour entrance tests in one day–ack!), 2 strenuous interviews and countless nights spent worrying I wouldn’t get in, I found out Friday at Noon that I have been accepted!!

I am humbled, honored and am still pinching myself.

I will begin graduate classes toward a Masters in Elementary Education in downtown Chicago on June 14th. I won’t know for a while which grade I will teach, though I applied to be a K-3rd grade teacher. My hope is for 1st grade.

Here is an issue– I may not be able to go to BlogHer now. I will be in class on Friday that weekend and I am not sure if I can miss any days of class. I will find out June 14, but if I do miss BlogHer this year, I know that I will be missing it for a good cause. :-)

—-

3rd big news:

During the time I was going through my first and second interviews for the graduate program, I was bitten by a (spider? some sort of bug? not sure) on my left shoulder. Overnight it went from a bite to the circumference of a baseball- sized infection. It was hot to the touch, blood red and I was only able partially lift my arm.

Of course.

I went to urgent care, where they put me on a SUPER strong antibiotic and Rx strength Motrin for the swelling. I was tired, not sleeping more than 2 hours a night and feeling crappy for days after starting the meds, though my infection seemed to be healing nicely. Then I had my final interview for grad school last Tuesday — that’s when I started having numbness in my left arm and pains in my chest on the left side of my body.

I figured I was having a panic attack/stressed out from what I thought was a horrible job I did at the interview, and tried to just shrug the pain and discomfort off.

but when I woke up Wednesday morning, I was still having the same feelings. I called urgent care back, and they told me to go to the ER.

So I went.

I will spare you the details, but in short, the infection that was in my shoulder was deeper than they thought, and it was pressing on a nerve in my arm causing it to go numb. I was also having a nasty reaction to the antibiotic, which caused my blood pressure to soar to 188/66. They got me up to the observation deck, got me fluids and some kind of meds, and got an X-ray of my shoulder, just in case. I came home with a muscle relaxer and a blood pressure of 118/47. MUCH BETTER.

My arm is still a bit numb, but I am feeling much better. The meds that made me so sick are done now, and the infection seems to be gone. Thank goodness.

I have to say, the nurses and doctors at the Northwestern ER were great, but I hope to never see them again.

It has been a crazy mixed up life the past few months, but I am glad I was along for the ride.

I am not sure how my blog will change now that I am going to be training for and then teaching. I of course will continue to blog about my 1/2 marathon training, and I have short and long term goals to continue on my weight loss journey. I just have to be a bit censored now that some know my real name (though some still don’t) and I don’t want to be penalized for what I say on this blog.

AJ is Starving…

Untitled picture

I am so freaking hungry.

I had nothing ready/available for lunch or dinner today. Dumb, I know, but I guess I really wasn’t as prepared as I thought for bootcamp day one. Lunch was tuna , 13 whole wheat crackers and a single serving of low-fat cottage cheese. Oh, and water. And some black berries.

For dinner, I had some left over crock pot chicken, but no brown rice or veggies to go with it. Ran to the grocery store tonight at 7:30 (30 minutes before I wanted to be “done” eating for the night) and was over-hungry*.

Nothing looked remotely good.

I grabbed 3 packages of frozen brown rice, steam in a bag fresh broccoli and cauliflower, 3 cans of 98% fat free cream of mushroom soup (for a crockpot recipe) and a few other things (including cat food for my poor little big hungry one). I threw the rice in the micro, then the leftover chicken, then the bag of veggies. I had a meal in under 10 minutes, and of course, I wolfed it down. I had 3 veggies left and 1/2 my plate of chicken and rice, and I am feeling full but not stuffed (a 4 on the WW Momentum 1-5 scale).

Also, I had about 5 sips of Diet Coke, and while I am not happy about it, I had a raging I-haven’t-had-a-diet-soda-in-2-days-and-haven’t-eaten-since-1pm headache. I am happy to say it is gone. To break the soda dependency, I am going to have to go slow. Maybe one a day for a few days, then 1/2 for a few days, then 1/2 every other day until I lose the headaches. This going cold turkey is for the birds.

This is the part of working out I haven’t figured out- I have never been able to eat well AND excercise a the same time.

It is either one or the other. Walk four 5k’s and one 10k during the year, eat alot of crap. Eat well, absolutely no exercise.

I am sure it is a dance I will learn to do over time, but I always seem to fail at one as I succeed at the other.

OK, I am going to clean up my dishes and get to bed so I can be up at 5 tomorrow morning. :-)

*Old over-hungry me would have ran to McDonald’s instead of the store, so that is a small NSV.

I kick A$$ Today!
